Former Hibs boss favourite for vacant Birmingham City job following sacking of Man Utd legend

Sunderland fired former Hibs manager Tony Mowbray back in December. However, Mail Online reports that he is now the clear favorite to take over Birmingham City’s open managerial position, therefore he may be returning to the position. This comes after the legendary Wayne Rooney of Manchester United was fired after little over two months in the role.

After leading Hibs to an outstanding 48.15% win percentage from 2004 to 2006, Mowbray left Easter Road to become a manager at West Bromwich Albion. The Saltburn native has also previously managed teams like Celtic, Coventry City, and Blackburn Rovers, albeit to differing degrees of success. Who else is vying for the manager position at Birmingham City?

Although Mowbray seems to be the front-runner for the Blues position, there are other well-known names that have also been connected to the open position. Jesse Marsch, a former Leeds United manager, is being considered as well. Even though Marsch hasn’t had much success in English football, it makes some sense to assign an American manager to Birmingham, since the team’s ownership is predominantly American and includes NFL player Tom Brady.

Another person who has been connected to a move to St Andrews is Steve Cooper, who was recently fired from Nottingham Forest. After leading the Tricky Trees to a playoff victory in 2022, he undoubtedly has a good Championship record, but it’s uncertain if he’s ready to return to management at this stage of his career.
