Terry Butcher opens up about being fired by Hibs and how he “regrets” leaving Inverness.

Terry Butcher reveals that departing Inverness for Hibs remains one of the most significant regrets of his managerial career.

The former Caley Thistle boss, now 65, is returning to the Highlands as a special guest for Saturday’s Championship match against Ayr United. Butcher led Inverness for nearly five years, achieving promotion to the top-flight in 2010 and securing a fourth-placed league finish later on.

However, just over a decade ago, he made the pivotal decision to leave Inverness, who were then second in the league, to replace Pat Fenlon at struggling Hibs, who were languishing in seventh, 10 points behind. Unfortunately, this move proved detrimental, as Butcher was dismissed from Easter Road after less than seven months following the club’s shocking relegation. Looking back, the Rangers legend admits he wishes he had chosen differently.

Recalling his time at Inverness fondly, Butcher expressed, “It was just a wonderful time in our lives. Unbelievable, really.” He cherished the experience of working at the club and living in the area, describing it as a “beautiful way of life.” Despite the bittersweet ending, he still holds affection for the memories and friendships made during his tenure.

Butcher candidly acknowledges his regrets about leaving Inverness, especially considering the success they achieved shortly after his departure, notably winning the 2015 Scottish Cup. Reflecting on his decision, he mentioned considering a new contract at Inverness but ultimately feeling drawn to the challenge and potential of Hibs.

While Butcher believed he had taken Inverness as far as he could, he now sees the missed opportunity in leaving too soon. He compares his situation to managerial legends like Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasizing the importance of time and continuity in building successful teams.

Despite the setback at Hibs, Butcher recognizes the positive impact he had on Inverness during his tenure and acknowledges the need for change at times. However, he concedes that leaving when he did may not have been the best course of action.

In conclusion, Butcher reflects on the valuable experiences gained throughout his managerial career, acknowledging the lessons learned from his time at Inverness and Hibs. He expresses a sense of sadness and regret about leaving Inverness but also appreciates the journey and the improvements made to the club under his leadership.

Finally, Butcher’s appearance at the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness for ‘An evening with two of Rangers’ greatest ever captains’ on Saturday is noted, with tickets available through Eventbrite.
