Relief for Hawks as James Sicily diagnosis revealed, father-son set for first game

AFL 2020: James Sicily on his white-line fever, Hawthorn, and how he found his calm | Herald Sun

Hawthorn captain James Sicily has managed to avoid immediate surgery after dislocating his shoulder for the second time this season. Despite the injury suffered during Sunday’s match against West Coast, Sicily is aiming to play against Geelong this weekend. He underwent scans on Monday which indicated that surgery isn’t needed right away, although it is likely required at the end of the season. Sicily participated in a light training session on Tuesday and will need to pass a fitness test on Thursday to be cleared for the game against Geelong on Saturday at GMHBA Stadium.

Earlier in the season, Sicily first dislocated his shoulder in round eight against the Western Bulldogs, causing him to miss the following two matches. Instead of opting for season-ending surgery in May, Hawthorn chose a rehabilitation program to strengthen his shoulder, allowing him to return in round 11 against Brisbane. Since then, Sicily has shown impressive form, reminiscent of his performances that earned him the Peter Crimmins Medal and All-Australian honors last year.

If Sicily requires more time to recover, Jai Serong is likely to be called up, given his strong performances in the VFL. Serong previously filled in when Sicily was absent in round ten against St Kilda and retained his spot for the following match against Port Adelaide, where Ethan Phillips also made his sole appearance of the season so far.
