AFC Wimbledon have signed former Forest Green striker Mathew Stevens, who became a free agent following The Green Devils’ relegation to the National League. Stevens, 26, has agreed to a two-year contract with the Dons.

The club had shown interest in Stevens during the January transfer window of the 2022-23 season, but he opted for a loan move to Walsall instead. During the 2021-22 season, Stevens scored 23 goals in 37 League Two matches, helping Forest Green achieve promotion to League One.

Expressing his excitement, Stevens said, “I’m over the moon. Every player’s dream is to get a deal done nice and quick. I’m looking forward to focusing on the task ahead. This is a big move for me. This club is massive – the history behind it and the support speaks for itself. The manager and the location were big draws. The style of play suits me, and I’m confident I can score plenty of goals here.”

Dons manager Johnnie Jackson commented, “We’re buzzing to get this one done so early. Matty is a proven goalscorer at this level and has achieved promotion at this level as well. He’s got a lot of experience but is still at a good age where he wants to progress in his career. From the minute I met him, you could feel his enthusiasm and hunger to be part of what we’re doing here.”

Head of football operations Craig Cope added, “We’re delighted to welcome Matty and his family to Wimbledon. Matty demonstrated a real desire to be a part of the club, and we feel his attributes suit us.”
