Just last week saw them hit with another alleged breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, mere months after they received a ten-point deduction for the same crime.
They cannot escape the unrelenting cycle they find themselves in, which has plunged them into three straight relegation battles now. The only hope is that they can continue to navigate them with caution.
However, one report has now emerged touting a name they could acquire late on in the window, but Sean Dyche must remain vigilant.
He should not look to simply sign just anyone, with the Premier League watching them so closely. Whoever comes in this January must prove to be a catalyst that positively affects the squad.
Who could Everton sign this January?
Therefore, it would have been unwise for the club to offload the £15m touted for Real Betis’ Luis Henrique, as one report suggested they might do.
And, it would also have marked questionable business to offload the £16m wanted for unknown Argentine Aaron Anselmino too.
Looking closer to home, recruiting from another Premier League side does sound wiser on paper, but not if it is merely for the sake of it.
Said Benrahma, for example, would detail a late panic buy from West Ham United, yet talkSPORT seem rather certain that the Algerian could still make a late Goodison Park switch.
Snagging the 28-year-old from east London could in turn help the Hammers push through their move for Norwich City’s Jonathan Rowe.
Would Said Benrahma improve Everton?
Whilst the Benrahma that played for Brentford might have improved Dyche’s outfit, the one that they would be set to gain from the London Stadium might not have the same transformative effect.
After all, this has been a trying year for the wide man, who has struggled to make his mark on Moyes’ side despite being brought in by the Scotsman, first on loan and later for £20m in 2021.
This season has seen the 21-cap international fail to score in the Premier League, and therefore by comparison he is even more profligate than Jack Harrison, who has only managed to post a 13% goal conversion rate.
Even last season saw Everton’s on-loan ace record another 13% conversion rate compared to Benrahma’s 8%, indicative of added profligacy that Everton do not need.
They can do without another winger who seems to have lost that finishing touch, and despite rumours emerging suggesting Arnaut Danjuma could be on his way out, they cannot afford to allow such a huge downgrade to replace the Dutchman.
After all, from 13 appearances and a mere four starts in the league, the 26-year-old has a single goal. Benrahma has none, and has even made one more start.
