Mark Clattenburg strongly asserts that Nottingham Forest faced unjust treatment from the match officials during Everton’s 2-0 victory at Goodison Park on April 21st.
In his column for the Daily Mail, Clattenburg criticized the refereeing decisions that led to three penalty calls being denied for Nottingham Forest, labeling the situation a “joke” and describing the match as one of the most unpleasant experiences for the team. He expressed skepticism that any apology or acknowledgment of error from the authorities would suffice for Forest, as the damage had already been done.
Clattenburg’s affiliation with Forest in an advisory role prompted his passionate criticism, leading Gary Neville to call for his resignation from the position. Despite the controversy, Forest’s suggestion that VAR official Stuart Attwell’s allegiance to Luton Town influenced his decisions was swiftly dismissed by all parties.
Even from an Everton perspective, it’s hard to deny that all three incidents could have been deemed penalties, highlighting a poor refereeing performance regardless of one’s allegiance.
However, the outcome mattered little to Sean Dyche and his team, as the crucial three points bolstered their Premier League survival prospects while leaving their rivals facing a challenging end to the season.
