The nation will be talking about England’s starting lineup for their match against Slovenia on Tuesday, and Joe Cole has put forth a suggestion that even he acknowledges is “extraordinary.”
English fans’ hopes for the team’s success at Euro 2024 have dimmed following two lacklustre showings in their first two games.
After struggling to a 1-0 victory against Serbia in their first game, the Three Lions were outplayed for the whole of their 1-1 tie with Denmark in Frankfurt.
Despite selecting the same starting lineup for both games, there is a general belief that Gareth Southgate has to make some changes.
Cole has also hinted that it would even entail assessing Harry Kane’s position on the squad.
‘They need to go back to basics and thicken that midfield up,’ he said on beIN Sports.
‘Then he has a question, (Bukayo) Saka or (Phil) Foden’. A pause then followed before he added ‘or Harry (Kane)’.
Cole then said ‘extraordinary’ as fellow pundit Gray nodded his head and repeated him.
Speaking further on the team, Cole said: ‘Trent (Alexander-Arnold) needs to come out of the midfield. Especially when you’re not playing well you can’t have a passenger.
Southgate has started with the same XI in both of England’s opening two matches
‘Trent’s a player that with the ball he’s got such artistry and can pick a pass.
‘Just before he came off he hit an absolute worldie into Saka. If Saka brings it down and puts it in he’s done his job.’
England face Slovenia in their final group game on Tuesday night knowing a win will secure top spot and a more favourable last-16 tie.
