Corbin Carroll’s start to the season has been disappointing following the lofty bar he set for himself as a rookie, but the Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder came out strong on Sunday.

Carroll seized command of the game early, hitting from the leadoff spot and jumping on the first pitch to put the ball in play. He waited as he approached second base before accelerating to third, noticing the delayed relay from Detroit’s defense.

Detroit manager A.J. Hinch considered contesting Carroll’s safety at third, but decided not to.

After Carroll got the D-backs started, Ketel Marte worked a 1-2 count into a seven-pitch walk before Joc Pederson doubled to send Carroll home and put Marte on third. Christian Walker delivered a sacrifice fly to bring Marte home, giving Arizona an early 2-0 lead after one.

Carroll had only four hits in his previous 36 at-bats heading into Sunday, one of which was a triple on Saturday.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo tinkered with the batting order throughout ten games from April 24 to May 5, during which Carroll only batted seventh or eighth. In those games, he went 6 for 35 (.171).

Prior to Sunday, he was 6-for-41 (.146) since returning to the top of the order (batting first or second in all but ten games) on May 7.

After the first-inning triple, Carroll’s next at-bats included a 3-0 count and a four-pitch walk.
