The Texas Rangers were trounced by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, 3-1.On Wednesday night, the series comes to an end, and the Tigers have the next day off to head home.
Due to a possible injury, starting pitcher Jack Flaherty had to leave the game early in Tuesday’s victory, raising concerns.
But following the game, the right-hander provided a positive update, according to Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press.
“I’ll be OK for the subsequent one, I’m sure. Strangely enough, it works out, but I have two more days. I refuse to continue with the two days off for another week. Tomorrow will tell how I feel when I get up, but overall, I feel quite well.
With just 60 pitches, Flaherty threw five scoreless innings and was clearly dominating. He gave up two singles and did not walk anyone, but his back tightness forced him out of the game early.
The game “locked up” as it progressed, according to Flaherty. I’m not really concerned about it. When it locks up like that, you find yourself not being able to finish as much, or you begin to wonder if you should continue. It quietly crept into your thoughts. I stayed as long as possible.
Nevertheless, Flaherty says he should be ready for his upcoming start, and the additional sleep should provide him plenty of time to recover.
Jack Flaherty of the Tigers begins on early departure.
“I’ve made many successful pitches. When I withdraw from a game, it’s typically because I’ve been really hurt. That was the kind of stuff. You have to be aware of where the game is at, how you’re feeling, and when it can start to become harmful. You simply keep pitching until something doesn’t feel quite right.
After nearly his whole career with the St. Louis Cardinals, Flaherty joined the Baltimore Orioles in the midst of the 2023 season in a blockbuster trade. He is currently in his first season with the Tigers. Flaherty has made 12 starts for the Tigers and has a 3-4 record with a 3.22 ERA.
It’s encouraging to see Flaherty returning to form after struggling with the Cardinals in 2023, going 7-6 with a 4.43 ERA before going 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA with the Orioles. The Tigers are 31-30, so there’s a potential Flaherty’s name will come up in trade talks in the month that precedes the MLB Trade Deadline.
On Wednesday, the Tigers will conclude their series with the Rangers and return home for a six-game homestand against the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers. It appears that Flaherty will make his next planned start.
