Tarik Skubal is unbeatable if the Tigers provide run support.
It must have been a beautiful thing to watch for a patient fan base.
On paper, Monday night’s 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays was just one of 13 wins for the Detroit Tigers in 2024. However, the game was not just one of 162.
It was a glimpse of what Detroit could become with ace Tarik Skubal on the mound.
The Tigers have played far too many close games in 2024, thanks to an offence that has struggled to get going and provide run support to an otherwise strong pitching staff.
Skubal is a good enough pitcher to win Detroit games in close games where the offence may not be contributing, but he becomes unbeatable when the Tigers provide him with any sort of run support.
That was the case against the Rays, when Skubal went six innings, allowing just three hits, no walks, and nine strikeouts.
“The stuff is off-the-charts good,” manager A.J. Hinch said after the game, according to MLB.com’s Joey Johnston. “His work ethic is exceptional. His competitiveness is good. “He was in complete command.”
The Tigers could have won that game 2-1 with Skubal on the mound, but any type of run support elevates a Skubal start from winnable to unstoppable for Detroit. And for a team that hasn’t won a game since 2016 and hasn’t advanced to the playoffs since 2014, every victory is critical.
Skubal has a 3-0 record in five starts this season, with a 1.82 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched), ranking second in baseball.
