Damon Harrison, a former nose tackle for the Detroit Lions, is currently attempting to convince the team to sign free agent Quandre Diggs, a safety.

NFL: Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions

There are just three safeties on the Detroit Lions roster at the moment. They require depth—ideally, depth with a player who has a chance to start.
Harrison, Damon “Snacks” to the rescue.
Using Twitter on Friday night, the former nose tackle for the Lions attempted to entice a Pro Bowl safety to Detroit—and a well-known one at that. Harrison encouraged former Lions safety Quandre Diggs, also referred to as “Nino,” to return to Detroit via a tweet.
Harrison tweeted, “Nino going to Detroit is the only news we need right now. Tell him to bring his old secondary buddy along too.”

The date is January 14, 2012. We are in San Francisco at Candlestick Park. The 49ers need a touchdown with 14 seconds remaining, down three, and facing a third down to maintain their hopes of making the playoffs without having to go to OT. In the meantime, the Saints can draw a conclusion from this and move on to the NFC Championship Game. We need to look back in time to comprehend how we got here and to fully appreciate what this moment signifies.

The Seattle Seahawks cut safety Jamal Adams and Diggs in order to save contract space, clearing almost $27 million in total. Diggs is now a free agent.

Diggs was selected by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2015 draft, and he went on to establish himself as a team leader and full-time starter. In 2018, he signed a three-year contract extension with the Lions. However, a year or so later, due to mounting tensions between him and new head coach Matt Patricia, Detroit abruptly traded Diggs and a seventh-round pick to Seattle in exchange for a mere fifth-round pick.

Diggs then went on to seize the chance he had with the Seahawks. Over the next three seasons, he made it to the Pro Bowl each time and recorded a total of 14 interceptions. Although the 31-year-old safety’s output from the previous season was somewhat down (five passes defended, one interception), many still think he has plenty of football left in him.

Whether Diggs is interested in signing with Detroit or the Lions is a matter of debate. On the other hand, Diggs replied to this tweet and made a few Twitter hints about possibly going back to Detroit.

Here he is chatting with Kerby Joseph, the safety for the Lions:

The Lions have returned past players to the team in recent years, with varying degrees of success. Last year, Graham Glasgow, Marvin Jones Jr., and Jalen Reeves-Maybin all made their way back to Detroit, with largely positive outcomes. We’ll see whether Diggs is added to the roster by the Lions.
