Barry Sanders, a running back in the Detroit Lions Hall of Fame, expressed his excitement following the team’s first-ever NFC North championship.
For the first time in franchise history, the Detroit Lions are the NFC North champions. Since the NFC North was formed in 2002, the Lions had never won their division. This is a historic moment for a Lions squad that has always failed to win on a regular basis.
The organization and supporters, including former Lions like Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders, are ecstatic about winning the division title. Sanders played in two of the Lions’ three division victories during the Super Bowl era and their final division-winning squad from 1993.
Now, in the Super Bowl era, this Lions club will try to win only its second playoff game. In 1991, Sanders was a member of the only Lions team to win a postseason game during the Super Bowl era. Detroit overcame Dallas to go to the NFC Championship Game, where they were upset by Washington. Detroit is finally hosting a playoff game once more after a protracted absence.
“Like many Lions fans, I’m ecstatic,” Sanders exclaimed during the Pat McAfee program. “I think there was a lot of excitement about this club going into the season. I believe they have lived up to the supporters’ expectations.
Over the next two weeks, the Lions will now look to see if they can strengthen their position and perhaps even steal the No. 1 seed. Detroit has the opportunity to secure the top seed if they defeat the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco 49ers lose at least one game. In any case, they get to host a postseason game. If they don’t secure the first seed, they’ll probably play the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks.
