Warne is poised to decisively part ways with a Derby promotion standout who earns a higher salary than Cashin.

Scoring a goal and providing an assist in his 37 league appearances, the former Norwich City midfielder could offer Derby valuable experience and tenacity in midfield as they move back up to a division where he has accumulated 245 appearances in the past.

However, Derby seems to be considering signing young Celtic talent Bosun Lawal and potentially making Ebou Adams’ loan permanent, which could limit Smith’s playing time next season.

Additionally, Smith’s high salary could make parting ways with the aging midfielder easier, especially considering he earns more than defensive standout Eiran Cashin, who has played a crucial role in Derby’s strong defensive record this season.

Cashin’s relatively low salary might need to be increased to retain him beyond this summer, especially with other clubs likely to show interest in him. This could involve releasing Smith to free up space on the wage bill.

Given Cashin’s importance to Derby’s solid defense, particularly with the team conceding the fewest goals in the league this season, retaining him seems crucial for their upcoming campaign in a higher division.

Given that Smith is 11 years older than Derby’s promising number six and possibly not at his peak for second-tier soccer, it might make sense to let go of the £7k-per-week player soon. But regardless of who remains on the team, Derby fans are eagerly anticipating the return to Championship football next season, just happy to see their beloved team in action again.
