Wanderers Manager reacts to Derby County’s promotion, while Darren Ferguson makes a statement.

Bolton manager Ian Evatt has addressed missing out on automatic promotion to Derby County. Despite still having a slim chance of securing second place in League One on the final day, Bolton faced Peterborough United, taking an early 2-0 lead. However, Peterborough responded with three goals, leading to a 3-3 draw. This result left Bolton trailing Derby by five points, as Derby secured second place and automatic promotion by defeating Carlisle United 2-0 at Pride Park.

Reflecting on the match, Evatt stated, “We got ourselves two up, but could and should have scored more.” He acknowledged that news of Derby’s score likely affected the team’s morale. Despite missing out on automatic promotion, Evatt highlighted the positives of the season, such as an improved points tally and league position, as well as fewer losses. However, he recognized the need to convert drawn games into victories and emphasized the team’s focus on their upcoming match against Barnsley.

“I firmly believe we’re in a better place for it than we were last season. The squad has evolved, the mentality is a lot stronger and we’ve got key personnel back at the right time. “We go everywhere to win and that won’t change. There will be no backward steps from us.”

Peterborough, finishing in fourth place, will also compete in the playoffs. Manager Darren Ferguson commented on Bolton’s aggressive start, acknowledging its effectiveness for Bolton and the challenge it posed for his team.
