A two-year-old supporter of Derby County Football Club experienced a stroke shortly after the team secured promotion. Reuben’s family is now working hard to aid his recovery before the Rams return to the Championship. The stroke, affecting the left side of Reuben’s brain on May 1st, resulted in impaired movement in his right arm and leg, as well as speech difficulties. Despite this setback, his family remains hopeful that he will be well enough to attend the first game of the season in August at Pride Park.
Reuben’s father, Liam Mather, explained that prior to the stroke, Reuben had no health issues and was an active and sports-loving child. The incident occurred suddenly while he was with his mother, as he showed signs of discomfort and then struggled to get out of the bath. Prompt medical attention was sought, and Reuben is currently receiving treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he is showing promising signs of improvement.
Although Reuben’s speech is slowly returning, he still lacks movement in his right arm and leg. The family is seeking additional support through private physiotherapy and speech therapy, as well as potential home adjustments. They recognize the critical importance of the initial three to six months post-stroke for recovery and are determined to maximize Reuben’s chances for improvement.
The family has been overwhelmed by the support received from the Derby County community, including messages from players and the manager. They express gratitude for the outpouring of assistance and solidarity during this challenging time. The club has been supportive, and the family is committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure Reuben’s well-being and potentially his return to Pride Park.
