Striker who Paul Warne said would cost £1m is released after Derby County links

Peterborough United have officially announced the departure of Jonson Clarke-Harris as they revealed their list of retained players following their playoff loss to Oxford United.

The striker had been strongly linked with a transfer to Derby County last summer, although these rumors were mostly speculative because of his previous connection with Paul Warne at Rotherham.

At the time, Derby’s head coach acknowledged that acquiring Clarke-Harris would have cost around £1 million, especially after his potential move to Bristol Rovers fell through on the deadline day in September.

However, Peterborough has now released him as they fell short of securing promotion to the Championship. Manager Darren Ferguson acknowledged Clarke-Harris’s impressive goal-scoring record and expressed confidence that he will find a good opportunity elsewhere.

Ferguson praised Clarke-Harris’s contributions, stating that he played a crucial role in their promotion, performed well in the Championship, and had a significant impact on the team’s recent successes. Despite initial expectations of his departure earlier in the season, Clarke-Harris stayed and showed professionalism and understanding despite limited playing time. Ferguson wished him the best for his future, acknowledging his deserving of a good move and expressing mutual respect between them.

Warne had previously commented on Clarke-Harris’s potential signing, highlighting concerns about investing a substantial sum in a player over 30 with limited resale value, suggesting it wasn’t the best strategy for a forward-thinking football club.
