Peterborough United boss tries to turn screw on Derby County with ‘have to’ comment

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson is urging Derby County to step up their game in the race for automatic promotion. He emphasized that Paul Warne’s team must secure a victory against Cambridge United this weekend. Ferguson’s approach mirrors the psychological strategies employed by his father, Sir Alex Ferguson. Despite the challenging situation, he hasn’t given up hope on Peterborough’s chances of claiming the second spot. This contrasts with Ian Evatt from Bolton, who seems resigned to the playoffs after their recent draw, despite being three points behind Derby with two matches left.

Warne’s team only needs four points from their remaining two games to reach 90 points and secure Championship football for the next season. However, both Bolton and Peterborough are still in contention for second and third place, with only one of them capable of reaching 89 points. This scenario depends on Derby slipping up, especially as they face Cambridge this weekend.

Ferguson highlighted the importance of Derby winning, although realistically, a draw in their upcoming match and a subsequent victory against Carlisle would be sufficient for their promotion. Following Peterborough’s 4-1 victory over Fleetwood, Ferguson expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging key players like Jonno, David Ajiboye, and Malik for their contributions. He also praised Ephron Mason-Clark for his role in the fourth goal and acknowledged the goalkeeper for making two penalty saves.
