Ian Evatt maintains that Bolton Wanderers are actively competing to snatch automatic promotion from Derby County, despite acknowledging the need for a pragmatic approach in preparing for the play-offs.
Bolton’s hopes of securing second place suffered a setback after Shrewsbury unexpectedly drew 2-2 at the Toughsheet Stadium on Tuesday, preventing Evatt’s team from narrowing the gap to Derby to just one point, a scenario that would have significantly pressured Paul Warne’s squad for their final two matches.
Currently, Derby only require a win and a draw from their remaining games against Cambridge and Carlisle.
While Evatt’s midweek comments hinted at Bolton’s increased focus on the play-offs for promotion, he clarified ahead of their match against Port Vale that his statements were not a sign of resignation.
