JUST IN : Bolton Wanderers boss sends ‘fighting’ Derby County message over promotion battle

Ian Evatt maintains that Bolton Wanderers are actively competing to snatch automatic promotion from Derby County, despite acknowledging the need for a pragmatic approach in preparing for the play-offs.

Bolton’s hopes of securing second place suffered a setback after Shrewsbury unexpectedly drew 2-2 at the Toughsheet Stadium on Tuesday, preventing Evatt’s team from narrowing the gap to Derby to just one point, a scenario that would have significantly pressured Paul Warne’s squad for their final two matches.

Currently, Derby only require a win and a draw from their remaining games against Cambridge and Carlisle.

While Evatt’s midweek comments hinted at Bolton’s increased focus on the play-offs for promotion, he clarified ahead of their match against Port Vale that his statements were not a sign of resignation. He emphasized that his decisions are based on careful consideration, incorporating input from his trusted staff and recognizing his own growth as a young manager who occasionally makes mistakes.

Although forced changes impacted their recent match, Evatt maintains belief in the team’s capabilities and their ongoing fight for automatic promotion. However, he also stressed the importance of a pragmatic approach, ensuring the squad is in optimal condition for the play-offs while not ruling out their chances for securing an automatic spot.
