Ian Evatt acknowledges Derby County and Bolton Wanderers’ League One promotion hopes following a recent development.

Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt has engaged in discussions about the League One promotion battle, particularly with regards to Derby County, as the season approaches its climax.

The competition for promotion in League One remains intense as the final games draw near. Portsmouth has already secured their spot in the Championship, leaving just one automatic promotion place open, with the remaining teams destined for the playoff scramble.

Derby County initially held the upper hand following their victory over Leyton Orient, but their lead could have been trimmed to a mere point had Bolton Wanderers won their postponed match against Shrewsbury Town. However, a 2-2 draw leaves Derby still ahead by three points with two matches left. A minimum of four points in their final games would guarantee promotion for Paul Warne’s team.

Ian Evatt, reflecting on his team’s draw, seemed resigned to the likelihood of entering the playoffs unless something extraordinary unfolds. He emphasized the need for a positive mindset and momentum, acknowledging the frustration of missed opportunities.

With just two matches remaining, Derby County controls their destiny in their quest for Championship promotion, needing four points from clashes against Cambridge United and Carlisle United. Bolton Wanderers remain within striking distance, trailing by only three points with a slightly inferior goal difference. Any misstep by Derby County could prove costly, especially considering Bolton’s fixtures against Port Vale and Peterborough United.

The situation is fluid, with Peterborough United potentially influencing the outcome, as they are six points behind second place with a game in hand. Their matchups against Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town before facing Bolton could add further complexity to the promotion picture.

Although both teams have a chance at securing second place, Derby County must now focus on securing the necessary points to clinch promotion.
