Gary Neville makes Derby County claim and confirms ‘it wasn’t what I wanted’

Gary Neville stated that he declined the opportunity to discuss the managerial position at Derby County before taking on the role of Valencia boss in 2015. He mentioned that other clubs like Middlesbrough and Newcastle also expressed interest in him, but he wasn’t interested in those positions either. Neville eventually became Valencia’s manager in 2015, albeit briefly, as his time there lasted only three months and was marked by challenges. He admitted that he took the Valencia job primarily because of his relationship with the owner, Peter Lim, whom he felt a sense of loyalty towards. Neville mentioned on the Stick to Football podcast that during his time at Sky Sports, he had received interview requests from Middlesbrough, Newcastle, and Derby, but he turned them down as they weren’t aligned with his career goals. Valencia’s performance under Neville’s management was subpar, with only three wins out of 16 league games and a significant loss in the Copa del Rey against Barcelona. He was ultimately dismissed when Valencia found themselves in a precarious position in La Liga.
