Former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney pulls out of new job after ‘painful’ update

Wayne Rooney, the former manager of Derby County, was set to make his first appearance on BBC’s Match Of The Day on Saturday night. However, a recent back injury he suffered while on vacation with his family forced him to postpone his debut on the renowned football highlights program.

Since his dismissal from Birmingham City after a troubled tenure, Rooney has been without a job and has been occasionally involved in punditry work with TNT Sports after returning to England from managing DC United. He has long harbored a desire to appear on MOTD and provide analysis, a dream he has held since childhood.

Despite his eagerness, Rooney will have to delay his debut due to the back injury sustained during his family holiday. It is anticipated that the BBC will extend an invitation to Rooney to join the show once he is both available and physically fit to resume work.

Expressing his disappointment, Rooney shared on social media, “I’m disappointed not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTD show tonight, something I’ve wanted to do since I was young.” He explained his injury situation and expressed anticipation for joining the team soon.

Rooney’s managerial journey began at Pride Park after leaving DC United in the MLS, initially taking charge alongside Liam Rosenior, Shay Given, and Justin Walker after Philip Cocu’s departure in November 2020, before assuming the role permanently.

While Rooney initially steered Derby County away from danger, their performance declined mid-season, and they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day with a tense draw against Sheffield Wednesday. The club faced significant off-field challenges the following summer, and despite Rooney’s efforts, they struggled in the battle for survival even before the season began, leading to his resignation in the summer of 2022.
