‘Extreme’ – Leyton Orient boss has say on injury situation ahead of Derby County trip

Leyton Orient is set to return to League One action this weekend, facing Derby County away at Pride Park, who are in pursuit of promotion. The team is facing a significant challenge as numerous players are sidelined due to injuries. In their recent match against Exeter City, they managed a 2-2 draw with goals from Ollie O’Neill and George Moncur.

Following the game, Wellens expressed concern about the team’s injury situation, describing it as severe and now extreme. He mentioned that they will likely field a makeshift team for the Derby match, possibly giving opportunities to young players. They plan to assess the extent of injuries during training.

Leyton Orient has been missing key players like Darren Pratley, Theo Archibald, and Dan Happe recently. Additionally, defender Brandon Cooper sustained an injury against Exeter and will need evaluation.

Despite these challenges, Leyton Orient has had a respectable season in League One, considering they were promoted from League Two last year. Currently placed 10th, they joined Carlisle United, Northampton Town, and Stevenage in promotion, with only Stevenage having a higher league position.

Leyton Orient had been competing strongly for a spot in the play-offs until earlier this month when they suffered consecutive losses against Lincoln City and Peterborough United. With their chances for the play-offs dwindling, they now have little left to compete for but will aim to finish the season positively as they start planning for the summer.

As the end of June approaches, Leyton Orient faces decisions regarding several players whose contracts are expiring. This adds an extra layer of importance to their remaining matches.

Their upcoming opponents, Derby County, are vying for automatic promotion to the Championship alongside Portsmouth, currently holding the 2nd position ahead of Bolton Wanderers.

For Derby, Leyton Orient’s injury concerns could be advantageous as they strive to secure promotion under the leadership of former Rotherham United manager Paul Warne.
