Derby County’s hopes of signing Charlton Athletic’s Thierry Small have suffered a setback as Charlton has opted to extend the fullback’s contract by a year, as per reports. Derby, having secured promotion back to the Championship, had been monitoring Small’s situation but now face the prospect of having to negotiate with Charlton if they still wish to pursue him.
Small joined Charlton on a short-term deal in February and played a crucial role in their impressive unbeaten run towards the end of the season. His impact led Charlton to extend his contract, thwarting Derby’s hopes of a free transfer this summer.
While it was expected that Charlton would retain the 19-year-old given Derby’s interest, the Rams may now need to consider paying a fee if they wish to proceed with the signing. Nonetheless, Derby has likely identified other targets as well, meaning Small’s extension isn’t a make-or-break development for their upcoming season.
