Derby on the verge of losing a standout player who is valued at twice the amount of Mendez-Laing.

Derby County must have felt a sense of relief as the final day in League One played out smoothly against Carlisle United. They secured a confident 2-0 victory over Carlisle, clinching second place in the division and securing promotion back to the Championship.Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United were unable to catch up to the Rams in the race for the final automatic promotion spot. Max Bird and James Collins emerged as the heroes of the day at Pride Park, contributing to the goals that sealed Derby’s promotion under Paul Warne’s management.

However, the immediate concern following this joyous promotion is the potential departure of several key players, with Max Bird already set to join Bristol City in the summer.

Eiran Cashin will be the name that will be floated about as a main target for a number of clubs from the Rams, who will fend off any suitors coming their way unless a very attractive offer is put on the table.

Eiran Cashin’s rise at Derby

Derby will have been proud already with their achievement to return to the Championship after a couple of seasons in the League One wilderness, but even more proud to have a number of homegrown talents in their ranks to help pull off the success story.

Alongside Cashin, Louie Sibley and Bird have risen through the ranks from playing in the youth set-up to being dependable first-team faces capable of getting Derby back to the promised land of the second-tier.

Throughout Warne’s successful campaign with the Rams, the 22-year-old center-back has been exceptional, featuring in almost every League One game except for two, showcasing a consistent and reliable performance level. He formed a solid defensive partnership with Sonny Bradley and Curtis Nelson, contributing to Derby’s tight-knit defensive record, which was the best in the division, conceding only 37 goals across all 46 matches.

This promotion holds particular significance for the Irishman as he began his career with Derby during uncertain times for the club, demonstrating loyalty and dedication. The achievement of promotion is therefore even more rewarding, marking a significant turnaround from the turbulent period that once threatened the club’s stability.

The highly acclaimed defender could bypass the second tier altogether for a move directly to either Brighton and Hove Albion or West Ham United, as per previous rumors. However, for the Rams to even consider letting go of one of their key assets to any Premier League suitors, they would require a substantial offer.

Eiran Cashin’s market value in 2024 has surged to a significant £1.5 million according to Football Transfers. This valuation makes him twice as valuable as Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who has also had a notable season with Derby, contributing significantly to their promotion success.

Mendez-Laing, a former Cardiff City forward, concluded the season with an impressive total of 27 goal involvements for Warne’s promotion-winning Rams. Despite this, his value stands at a lower £769,000, reflecting his age being a decade older than Cashin’s.

Cashin’s pivotal goal against Cambridge United, just before the memorable home clash with Carlisle, essentially secured Derby’s promotion. Warne adeptly combined seasoned professionals with promising young talents like Cashin to achieve success.

Derby has been anticipating Cashin’s potential departure for some time now, evident in their strategic move to extend his contract in February. This decision aimed to eliminate distractions about the 22-year-old’s future during the promotion push. Additionally, this new contract ensures that the club won’t be pressured into accepting low bids for Cashin, as they would demand an offer significantly higher than the £1.7 million valuation to consider parting ways with their star defender.

Cashin might prefer to continue his development and success in Derbyshire rather than seeking a big move elsewhere, especially considering how Ipswich Town has managed their promotion with confidence, potentially inspiring Cashin’s team at Derby.

Warne likely aims for Derby to adapt smoothly to their new environment without much fanfare initially, focusing on stability in a division where financial issues have been a significant concern in the past.

The celebrations following the promotion aren’t over yet, with everyone involved with Derby relishing the joy of their success before addressing what lies ahead for Cashin and the team.
