Derby County missed a golden opportunity to widen their lead over Bolton in the automatic promotion race as Northampton Town secured a victory with Sam Hoskins’ first-half goal at Sixfields.

The game started with a rough beginning, but Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s skillful play led to a chance for Liam Thompson, whose shot was blocked. Moments later, Louie Sibley set up Martyn Waghorn for a shot, but it went over the bar.

Northampton took the lead controversially, with Kane Wilson possibly fouled in the build-up before Louis Appere crossed to Sam Hoskins for a well-taken volley goal.

Derby responded with Ebou Adams’ shot cleared off the line and another missed opportunity with a header from a Kane Wilson cross.

In the second half, Northampton nearly scored again when Manny Monthe’s powerful shot hit the post. Despite Derby’s efforts, including a Waghorn shot cleared off the line, they couldn’t find an equalizer.

This loss was a missed chance for Derby to assert dominance in the promotion race, especially with other top teams on an international break. The game highlighted Derby’s missed opportunities, injuries, and Sonny Bradley’s red card, which will lead to a suspension during a crucial part of the season. Mendez-Laing’s injury adds to Derby’s growing list of sidelined players.
