Derby County look to prepare for life in the Championship following their promotion from League One.

The Rams enjoyed a fine campaign in the third tier after failing to make the play-offs the season prior. They finished second in the table on 92 points, behind only the champions Portsmouth, who were unstoppable at times.

Derby spent just two years away from the second tier, and they now look to re-establish themselves as a solid Championship side under Paul Warne. A big summer lies ahead for the club as they aim to strengthen their already talented squad.

Unfortunately, they will be going into next season without one of their key players in Max Bird, who will return to his parent club Bristol City after signing for them in January. Bird progressed through the academy at Derby and became one of their most influential players in the heart of midfield, making 200 senior appearances in total.

Derby County should strongly consider pursuing Barnsley’s midfield talent as a replacement for Tyrese Fornah.

Fornah, aged 23, completed a move to Bristol City in January but remained on loan at Pride Park for the season. While Derby holds their academy product in high regard, the time has come to find a suitable replacement for the upcoming significant Championship campaign.

One player who undoubtedly catches the Rams’ attention is Barnsley midfielder Herbie Kane. At 25 years old, Kane has showcased his quality as one of League One’s standout midfielders this season. His potential signing would be an excellent choice to fill the void left by Bird.

Herbie Kane’s Barnsley departure appears imminent

According to Alan Nixon, via Patreon, Herbie Kane is looking for a new challenge for the upcoming season and will leave Oakwell when his contract expires this summer. Barnsley’s failure to secure promotion to the Championship, losing in the play-off semi-finals, appears to be a factor in Kane’s decision.

Kane’s departure on a free transfer will be a significant loss for Barnsley, as he was a key player for them. However, this news presents an opportunity for many clubs in need of a central midfielder this summer, as he becomes available.

One of the clubs keen on securing his signature is Derby, who are set to compete in the Championship. Nixon’s report suggests that Derby, under Paul Warne’s management, are closely monitoring Kane’s situation in anticipation of a potential move during the summer transfer window.

The ideal Max Bird replacement

Max Bird

Kane has spent the last four years at Barnsley, perfecting his trade in the middle of the park and even spending a season on loan with Oxford United, where he impressed many. Season by season, he has become progressively more important for the Tykes, and this season his nine goals and five assists stand him in good stead for a move to the second tier.

Herbie Kane’s league stats (last four seasons), as per Transfermarkt
Season Club Apps Goals Assists
2023/24 Barnsley 41 9 5
2022/23 Barnsley 40 4 6
2021/22 Oxford United 35 0 6
2020/21 Barnsley 24 0 0

The 25-year-old midfielder is versatile, capable of playing multiple roles in the center of the pitch, from a defensive midfielder to even a ‘number ten’ role. He brings a lot of energy and is highly dependable both defensively and offensively. This season, he has been a key player in one of League One’s strongest midfields, alongside players like Luca Connell and Adam Phillips.

Derby should prioritize signing Kane as a replacement for Bird, given their similar playing styles. Both players have a creative flair, an eye for goal, and have significantly developed their skills in the past 18-24 months. They are also adept at protecting the defense and intercepting opposition passes.

Replacing Bird, who has been crucial for Derby in recent seasons, won’t be easy. However, based on Kane’s form this season, he seems like the ideal candidate for the role, and it’s a realistic target for the club to pursue.
