Derby County is prepared for a big summer transfer window following its automatic promotion to the Championship last weekend.

The Rams overcame demoted Carlisle United at Pride Park, securing a place in the top two and triggering wild celebrations after the game.

But the goal for Paul Warne now is to construct a group capable of remaining in the second tier next season, having overcome difficulties to return to the league from which they were relegated two years ago.

However, their good performances have sparked interest in some of its key players, and supporters are anxious about whether they will be able to preserve their prized possessions ahead of their return to the Championship.

It’s easy to see why Cashin has gained popularity throughout his tenure in the first squad, bursting onto the scene at Pride Park amid a difficult time for the club.

However, since his debut during the 2021/22 season, the 22-year-old has seamlessly integrated into the first-team squad, securing a regular first-team berth following the club’s relegation to League One.

This season, the young defender has been an integral part of a team with experienced players, forming a strong partnership with Curtis Nelson and contributing to the Rams’ best defensive record in the division with only 37 goals conceded. He also played a key role in achieving promotion.

Since his arrival at Pride Park, the teenage defender has frequently been among the first names on Paul Warne’s teamsheet, and he appeared in all but two league games during the Rams’ promotion campaign, one of which was due to a yellow card suspension.

Having a player available week after week during an intense campaign has been a big advantage for Derby, as they have amassed their greatest ever points tally in a season, showing the club’s remarkable work with their promising academy players.

However, those who have advanced through the ranks have frequently been moved on, with the Rams letting players such as Luke Plange, Malcolm Ebiowei, and Kaide Gordon to go due to financial concerns off the pitch.

Max Bird moved to Bristol City in January and was loaned back for the rest of the season. The club hopes Cashin will not follow suit as they aim to establish a strong foundation for the Championship season ahead of a busy transfer window.

Eiran Cashin

Cashin’s impressive displays have come with interest, with a number of sides further up the football pyramid keen to sign the young defender.

Ahead of this season, it was reported that Premier League side, Brighton and Hove Albion, had multiple bids rejected by the club, with the Seagulls eventually matching Derby’s valuation. However, a deal was unable to be completed due to the limited timescale to find a replacement or arrange a loan back deal for Cashin.

But Roberto De Zerbi’s reported pursuit of the highly rated defender has alerted other clubs to his talents, with a report by Teamtalk also confirming that West Ham United, Burnley, Birmingham City and Middlesbrough all registered their interest in the 22-year-old.

Amid all the speculation that another bid was incoming for the defender, Cashin put pen to paper on a new deal at Pride Park, keeping him at the club until 2027, meaning should he leave, Derby are able to acquire a sizeable fee to prize him away from the East Midlands.

Derby County must keep hold of Eiran Cashin ahead of next season

Eiran Cashin

While the excitement and joy of promotion hasn’t worn off in the East Midlands, several of the club’s players, especially Cashin, will be concerned about what lies ahead.

The Rams have 12 players out of contract at the end of the season, potentially leading to the loss of experienced players with championship experience.

These choices are due to be made in the coming weeks, but Derby must avoid any prospective interest in the 22-year-old defender.

Successful teams in any tier are built on a strong spine, and Cashin was a big part of it. If you look at the team that helped gain automatic promotion this season, numerous players are still unsure about their future at the football club.

The contracts of Joe Wildsmith and James Collins will expire in the summer, while Max Bird will return to Bristol City. Ebou Adams will also leave, but talks are underway to bring him back to Pride Park on a permanent basis.

Despite his youth, Cashin has demonstrated his value to the team this season, as well as the player he has the potential to become under Warne’s supervision. His time in the second tier will be entirely different, and he might continue to thrive in the East Midlands, with the prospect of earning another promotion in the future.
