Derby County looking for potential loan move this summer

Derby County are keen to bolster their squad during the upcoming summer transfer window and are reportedly working on securing a deal for a midfielder. The Rams, newly promoted back to the Championship after two years in League One, need to strengthen key areas to ensure they can compete in the stronger division.

One pressing concern is the goalkeeper position, as Joe Wildsmith, who kept the most clean sheets in England’s third tier during the 2023/24 campaign, is set to leave once his contract expires at the end of the month. Finding a new number one will be a top priority for the club after the former Sheffield Wednesday star departs.

Head coach Paul Warne had initially targeted Swedish shot-stopper Viktor Johansson, whom he signed during his tenure at Rotherham United. Johansson had a reported release clause of £1 million, but Stoke City acted quickly to secure him with a three-year contract at the Bet365 Stadium.

Another critical area needing reinforcement is the midfield. Journalist Alan Nixon reports that Derby County are currently looking to sign a midfielder this summer, possibly on loan and with wages that the club can afford. However, no specific targets have been named.

One player Derby fans are eager to see return is Ebou Adams, who spent the latter half of the season on loan from Cardiff City. Adams impressed during his stint, particularly in a 2-0 victory over Carlisle United on the final day, earning the Man of the Match award and prompting fans to chant “sign him up” from the stands.

Adams would be an excellent signing for Derby County, even on another temporary basis. The 28-year-old quickly became a fan favorite at Pride Park and has the quality needed to compete in the Championship. Additionally, his familiarity with the team makes him an ideal acquisition.

However, Adams’ move to Cardiff in 2022 was marred by injury, causing him to miss the entire 2022/23 campaign. He made only 13 appearances for the Bluebirds under Erol Bulut in the first half of last season. Cardiff might be inclined to retain him to give him another chance to prove himself before his contract expires in the summer of 2025.
