Conor Washington and the Rotherham United contract clause

The agreement surrounding the striker’s move to Pride Park included a clause that could have led to financial gains for the Millers had the Rams secured promotion from League One this season.

Although Derby, under the management of former Rotherham boss Paul Warne, indeed achieved promotion, Washington did not feature in sufficient matches to trigger the clause that would have increased funds for AESSEAL New York Stadium.

However, there is still a possibility for the Millers to benefit financially if the Northern Ireland international reaches a specified number of appearances in the upcoming season.

The Advertiser has learned that the amount is in the five-figure range, significantly lower than the £300,000 figure circulating on social media.

Washington was brought in by Warne in May 2022 after being released by Charlton Athletic, playing 35 matches and scoring five goals in his sole season with New York in the Championship. Following a fallout with Warne’s successor, Matt Taylor, he reunited with Warne at Derby at the conclusion of the Millers’ campaign. His departure from New York didn’t involve a transfer fee.

The 31-year-old encountered an ankle injury while on duty with Northern Ireland in November, leading to a four-month absence from the field. In his first year with County, he made eight starts, appeared as a substitute 11 times, and scored three goals in league matches, with an additional three appearances in cup competitions.
