Cambridge Get Major Boost Against Derby with Return of Key Midfielder

Jordan Cousins is gearing up to rejoin the Cambridge United squad for their home clash against Derby County in Sky Bet League One this weekend. The midfielder has been a consistent presence this season, making 37 appearances across all competitions for the U’s, marking his highest tally since his time with Charlton Athletic in the 2015/16 Championship campaign.

Although Cousins missed the recent match against Bristol Rovers, head coach Garry Monk disclosed that the decision was deliberate, allowing the 30-year-old a rest ahead of the crucial fixture against Derby. Monk praised Cousins’ performance throughout the season and highlighted the importance of managing players carefully, especially given the physical toll and potential injuries at this stage of the season.

Meanwhile, captain Michael Morrison is expected to remain sidelined due to a knee problem that has kept him out of action since last month’s defeat against Reading. However, Monk expressed optimism regarding the potential return of striker Lyle Taylor, who has been absent since sustaining an injury in the match against Barnsley on Good Friday.

Monk provided updates on both players’ progress, indicating that while Morrison’s return seems unlikely for the upcoming fixture, Taylor’s chances appear more promising following his return to training. Additionally, goalkeeper Jack Stevens, who has been sidelined alongside Morrison since the defeat against Reading, is nearing a comeback from a hamstring injury. Final assessments will determine his availability for the Derby game, with the possibility of featuring in the subsequent home match against Wycombe Wanderers if he doesn’t make the squad for the Derby clash.
