A decade-long superstition involving a Derby fan’s beard is coming to an end.

A Derby County fan’s decade-long commitment to a beard is coming to an end. Inspired by his team’s resounding 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in March 2014, Richard Scott vowed not to shave until Derby earned promotion out of the Championship.

Despite being considered strong contenders for automatic promotion at the time, Derby’s journey to the Premier League took a full 10 years, finally achieving it this season. To mark this milestone and support Mental Health Matters, Richard will shave off his beard for the first time in a decade this month.

Reflecting on the origins of his pledge, Richard recounted, “I was all dressed up after attending the Cheltenham Festival, including a clean shave. Then, Derby triumphed against Forest, and I promised not to shave until our promotion.”

He humorously mentioned the unexpected delay, including play-off disappointments and unexpected challenges, making the beard’s fate a running joke among fans. Despite growing attached to his beard, Richard plans to part with it, though he’s open to growing a more manageable one in the future. The beard-shaving event will take place on May 24 at the Dandy Gent barbers in Derby.
