Don’t make your mind up on new Broncos QB Bo Nix just yet

Let’s give new Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix some time.

At least one season.

Sean Payton’s selection of Nix as the 12th overall choice in the 2024 NFL Draft sparked heated debate. Some fans will be ecstatic, while others will be less enthusiastic.

Everyone seemed to have a strong opinion about picking the sixth quarterback in the selection with just 12 picks.

The reality is that the Broncos, like all other teams, are playing the lottery. Nix has the potential to be a huge success or a complete failure. The same can be said for Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., and J.J. McCarthy. Those were the five quarterbacks selected ahead of Nix before Roger Goodell announced his name.

And, yeah, I had one of those opinions.

On draft night, I suggested that Payton pursue McCarthy, who was slipping down the selection board. No dice, as the Vikings swapped with the Jets to reach No. 10 and claim the national title winner.

Following that, tight end Brock Bowers of Georgia was ranked No. 12. Tight ends have become a premium position in the NFL, with arguably the best four in the league competing in conference championship games last season. Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews, Sam LaPorta, and George Kittle all reached the final four.

Nix, however, had always been Payton’s boy. After the selection, he claimed to falling in love with Nix during a private session in Oregon.

That’s Payton’s right, as he’s obviously making the important decisions down at Dove Valley right now. It’s his show, and his legacy will undoubtedly be linked to Nix in Denver.

So, before he even plays a snap in orange and blue, the appeal is quite simple: don’t make a decision on Nix until we see a meaningful sample size at the professional level.

The Broncos would be silly not to start Nix in Week 1 and throughout next season. They won’t win the Super Bowl in 2024, but let’s see what this young man can do.

Jarrett Stidham appeared twice at the conclusion of last year after Russell Wilson was benched, and it was not impressive. Zach Wilson was a former No. 2 overall pick, but his video in New York suggests he’s best suited as a backup in this league.

Nix is the unknown, which is why all Broncos fans should rally around him. Even if your favourite quarterback in the draft ended up with a different team, that’s okay. Nix is the guy that plays here, and fans should accept him.

After all, we’ve been seeking for a quarterback to lead us back to the playoffs ever since Peyton Manning retired.

Paxton Lynch, Denver’s last first-round quarterback, did not pan out, and there is a lengthy list of journeymen who have also failed here. Russell Wilson was not that, but his career appears to be coming to an end far earlier than many expected.

Nix is 24, and his college career spanned five seasons. The first three with Auburn, and the latter two with Oregon.

That just means he has a lot of experience and should be able to achieve success in the NFL fairly fast. You’d hate to have your mind made up on Nix, only for him to go out and kill it, leaving you looking like Homer Simpson backing into the bushes.

The reason Broncos supporters are often grumpy is simple to understand. They have not made the playoffs in eight years and have lost in each of the last seven.

So, rather of being divided over Nix, we can all root for him.

In his first press conference last week, he impressed by bringing up Manning and Nuggets star Nikola Jokic. That’s a terrific technique to get Denver to appreciate you immediately.

For the time being, try Nix. The reality is that we have no idea how his NFL career will progress.
