The Dallas Mavericks‘ current season: 5 high
After 23 games this season, the Dallas Mavericks have enjoyed one of the most entertaining starts to a season in franchise history.
Dallas has experienced its fair share of injury problems, but aside from that, the team is performing as well as could be predicted at this stage of the season.
With rookie center Dereck Lively II significantly further along in his development than was previously thought before training camp, and Jones Jr.’s potential to start on a wing, Dallas has received a much-needed boost in agility and intensity on both sides of the ball.
This season’s five high points and five low points for the Dallas Mavericks
Luka Doncic and Tim Hardaway Jr., two more Dallas players, are also strong contenders for two other awards at the conclusion of the season. No matter who wins MVP or who wins Sixth Man of the Year—Hadaway Jr. or Doncic—their improved play and defensive acuity indicate that they are prepared to help guide Dallas to a thrilling postseason run.
Dallas still has some holes on their roster that need to be filled, but if they can acquire some players through trade and have some good fortune with injuries, they have the makings of a contender. Dallas’s season has been unpredictable thus far, but it’s still very exciting.
Still, these are five high points and five low points from the Dallas Mavericks’ current campaign.
10. Pit: Kyrie’s latest foot problem
It was nice to see Kyrie Irving put together a run of games for Dallas lately after struggling with foot injuries early in the season. Sadly for Dallas, that all came to an abrupt end last Friday night against the Portland Trail Blazers, as Irving hurt his right foot again after a strange collision with teammate Dwight Powell under the hoop.
Despite the fact that Irving’s injury is only considered a contusion, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd did not provide a timeline for Irving’s recovery when he addressed the media prior to the Mavericks’ Tuesday night victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Kidd also mentioned that Irving has been walking with crutches and has a protective boot on his right foot.
The Mavericks have declared Irving’s damage to be little more than a bruise, but the extent of the harm is still unknown given the appalling circumstances. Dallas has only lost its two games that Irving has missed thus far, but if Irving is down for a longer length of time, the Mavericks may face some difficult obstacles.
Irving was coming off a strong comeback game in Utah following a minor foot ailment he sustained against Memphis on December 1. Irving was averaging 23 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game for Dallas through 17 games this season. Irving needs to return to the court quickly since a prolonged absence would put Dallas in a dangerous position in the rankings.
