P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford were acquired by the Dallas Mavericks during the NBA trade deadline, but they might not be done. After clearing waivers on Saturday, Spencer Dinwiddie is still a sought-after target in the buyout market.
After being traded to and dismissed by the Toronto Raptors, Dinwiddie is reportedly considering signing with the Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers. Dallas can pay him up to almost $5.3 million, but the Lakers can only offer him $1.5 million.
Dinwiddie played his last game as a Brooklyn Net against Dallas two days earlier at Barclays Center. On Thursday, he was in Madison Square Garden to see the Mavs defeat the Knicks. He had a conversation with Mark Cuban and watched his old teammate Luka Doncic lead the way while sitting by the Mavs bench.
Dinwiddie left for Los Angeles on Friday in order to watch the Lakers play the New Orleans Pelicans at Crypto.com Arena. He was seated beside agent Jason Glushon and general manager Rob Pelinka. The course of events presents a challenge to Dinwiddie’s financial prospects.
The team that contracts him won’t have his Bird rights because he was waived from his three-year, $54 million contract. If he wanted to make more than the midlevel exception this summer, he would have to join with a team that has cap room. In 48 games with the Nets this season, Dinwiddie averaged 12.6 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 39.1 percent from the field, 32.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 78.1 percent from free throw range.
During his Mavs career, Dinwiddie struck some of the best balances between efficiency and statistics production. Dinwiddie played 94 games for Dallas during the regular season and playoffs, averaging 16.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. He frequently emphasized how beneficial it is to play next to Doncic given his efficiency.
