Former NBA player for the Dallas Mavericks and current vice president of basketball operations Michael Finley revealed to the public a fascinating occurrence that occurred during a team practice.
He explained how Grant Williams questioned Luka Doncic’s dedication. Williams began making fun of the Slovenian phenomenon, believing that Doncic was not psychologically ready for practice that day.
Doncic, nevertheless, took advantage of the provocation to his advantage and displayed incredible basketball abilities that astounded everyone on the court.
“A player—I won’t name him—was practicing one day with Grant Williams. He made the decision that he wanted to become close to Luka. He believed Luka wasn’t prepared to practice that day. They were engaged in a scrimmage, to cut a long story short, and he was trash talking Luka all over the court. Luka finally responds, “Okay.” Luka went on a 26-6 run by himself, I swear to you. Anyone can inquire; I’m not making this up. By himself, he went on a 26–6 run. He demonstrated him everything on his own, including the three, post-ups, floaters, and everything else.
“Luka remained silent. “Do not poke the bear,” was the advice given by everyone on the sidelines, including the coaches. At the time, we had visitors in the gym, and they were oohing and aahing from the sidelines. Incredible. The child was unable to miss. He demonstrated his whole skill set in this five- to six-minute run, and I’m not talking about easy shots.
Williams’ tenure with the Dallas Mavericks was, ironically, short-lived. Of his four-year contract, he was only with the squad for half of the season.
His play with the Mavericks averaged 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds, but his stint in Dallas was marked by weak defense and erratic shooting.
Williams moved to the Charlotte Hornets after leaving the Mavericks, and he seemed to be doing well there. He has averaged 13.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while playing with the Hornets.
