McFadzean, who has led Coventry on several occasions, last played for the Sky Blues in an early November 3-2 loss at Preston North End.

The center back and Blackburn have agreed to a short-term contract that will run through the end of the 2023–2024 season.

“I would like to thank Kyle for his time at Coventry City,” said City manager Mark Robins.

“Everyone at the club and our supporters will remember him with fondness for years to come for his significant contribution to the success we have enjoyed recently, as well as the attitude he has shown both on and off the pitch.”

“We all hope the future holds the best for him.”

“Every time a pillar of our club passes away, it is a sad day,” executive chairman Doug King continued. We all wish Kyle the very best in the future and know that he won’t be forgotten.

“He will always be a member of the Sky Blue family and is highly respected both at our club and among our supporters.”

On the first weekend of the 2021/22 season, City’s first match back at the Coventry Building Society Arena against Nottingham Forest saw the defender score the game’s winning goal.

In the Championship play-off final from the previous season, McFadzean started as the Sky Blues fell to Luton Town at Wembley on penalties.

Prior to the 2019–20 season, he signed a free transfer from Burton Albion to join City.
