NUNEATON According to Holly Clement, Gareth Edwards, the director of Star Wars and an Oscar candidate, was one of 12 individuals honored on Monday by his home town.
Nuneaton native Edwards received the borough’s freedom on Monday during a Civic Award ceremony.
Known for his work on the Star Wars film Rogue One (2016), director Garry Edwards’ most recent film, The Creator, is up for multiple nominations, including outstanding visual effects for an Oscar.
Edwards received one of the eight Freedom of the Borough awards, and four former council members were nominated to become Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen.
The greatest honor bestowed by the council upon a Borough resident is that of Honorary Freeman or Freewoman.
It is awarded to someone who has long provided the Borough with outstanding service or who has greatly elevated the area’s reputation.
Edwards, a Nuneaton resident, was awarded the title of Freeman of the Borough as a consequence of his noteworthy media career.
In addition, Paul Gough, a former Commonwealth Champion, received the Freeman Award for his town crier services to Bedworth and Nuneaton.
representing the Borough in national and British tournaments with success.
Former council members Sheila Hancox, Bob Hicks, Geoff Ashford, and Sonja Wilson were named Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen.
This award is granted to people who, in the council members’ view, have significantly improved the welfare of the Borough community and upheld council ideals.
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council Leader Coun Kris Wilson stated: “We hope to keep reviving civic pride in the Borough through these awards.”
