Langstaff in, Godden out: Coventry City transfers we predict to happen before February 1st

After a slow start to the season, Coventry City’s turn around in the last weeks of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 has seen Mark Robins’ team move up to the region of the Championship table that many had anticipated them to be in.

After this comeback, Robins will be hoping that the rest of the window provides him enough time to further reorganize his team in order to sustain a second consecutive play-off drive, having lost to Luton Town in the final the previous season.

The excellent combination of Vlado Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres brought in enormous quantities of money, which allowed the Sky Blues to reinvest in their squad during the previous window. But it appears that this time around, the window will be much calmer.

With that in mind, FLW has predicted a number of transfers that could be made in the West Midlands between now and February 1st.

Macaulay Langstaff

Macauley Langstaff

The turmoil at Notts County following the poaching of head coach Luke Williams by rival Championship team Swansea City earlier this month should only increase the Sky Blues’ interest in Macaulay Langstaff.

The former Gateshead man is reportedly on the Sky Blues’ radar, according to Coventry Live earlier in the window, however it’s unclear if this interest is real right now.

In any case, Coventry’s front line would only gain from having the 26-year-old as a choice between Wright and Ellis Simms as summer additions. He has maintained his excellent record in front of goal in the fourth division following an incredible 42 goals in the National League last season.

Naturally, there will be some doubts because Langstaff has only ever played as high as County’s current position in his career. Moving up two divisions is a very different ballgame altogether, but skilled attackers never lose sight of the end result.

Matty Godden

Matt Godden Coventry City

One man who has played a key role in Coventry’s upward trajectory in recent seasons, and managed to do so by still going under the radar as a result of Gyokeres’ and Hamer’s exploits in Sky Blue, is Matty Godden.

The 32-year-old took his overall tally for the club to 50 goals with his brace in the 6-2 demolition of Oxford United in the FA Cup Third Round, and whilst Robins was quick to address that his muted celebrations were down to frustration, perhaps this hints at a move elsewhere.

Due to his goalscoring nous in the Championship over recent times, sides looking to steer clear of relegation in the second tier or those pursuing a promotion push in League One couldn’t go far wrong if a temporary deal potentially came to fruition, although Godden is under contract with the Sky Blues until the summer of 2025.

Liam Kelly

Liam Kelly, a 33-year-old Scot who has made over 150 club appearances—beginning in the 2017–18 season when the Sky Blues ultimately won the League Two play-off final—has also been a vital contributor to City’s ascent.

Even though Kelly is the captain of the team, he has mostly been benched this season or not included in the matchday squad by Robins. When asked if the midfielder might leave the team, Robins was quick to rule out any such moves.
