Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna believes Coventry’s Ellis Simms would have been on the radar of the majority of Championship clubs this summer as they prepare to face the striker on Saturday.

Coventry saw off competition to land Ellis Simms

Simms had made an impression for Sunderland in the Championship before, but on his return to Goodison Park, he was not given any playing time against Everton.

Consequently, a summer transfer was inevitable, and several teams, including Ipswich, have been linked to the 22-year-old.

However, it was Coventry who won the race to sign Simms, as they splashed out around £8m to bring the player to the Midlands.

Even though they had sold Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting CP, it was still a significant sum for the Sky Blues, who also brought in Haji Wright to strengthen their attack.

How has Ellis Simms done at Coventry?

Simms came to Coventry with high expectations considering the sum he paid, but it’s reasonable to argue that, with just two goals in 18 games, he hasn’t had the impact that many had hoped for.

Naturally, it’s premature to write Simms off because he’s still a very young player and, thanks to his all-around skill set, he offers more than just goal scoring.

In the upcoming weeks and months, nevertheless, there will be hope that Mark Robins can elicit more from the player.

What did Kieran McKenna say about Ellis Simms?

As previously said, there had been rumors that Ipswich was interested in signing Simms this summer. However, nothing materialized, and given that the Tractor Boys are currently second in the Championship, it’s safe to say they haven’t missed the striker.

The East Anglian Daily Times released an update following a conversation with the Ipswich manager, revealing that he still clearly thinks highly of Simms. The coach claimed that most teams in the league would like the striker.

“McKenna will not get into the details of whether Town made an offer for Ellis Simms, but he has high praise for the striker that he witnessed play for Everton’s academy.” Thinks that during the summer, he would have drawn interest from three quarters of the Championship.

David Prutton believes it will be another home win for Ipswich Town against Coventry City on Saturday.

Will Ellis Simms start against Ipswich?

For Coventry, Simms has begun the last two matches on the bench. Robins has added him as a replacement during the second half of each match.

He may start the game on the bench once more given their recent success, but you can be sure he will contribute in some way. They have historically struggled with consistency.

What next for Ipswich?

McKenna will only be thinking on the larger picture, and even if Coventry is ranked higher than them, he knows they pose a serious threat, especially now that they have begun to play well.

Championship Table (As it stands November 30th)
Team P GD Pts
1 Leicester City 18 21 43
2 Ipswich Town 18 15 42
3 Leeds United 18 13 35
4 Southampton 18 2 34
5 West Brom 18 12 32
6 Hull City 18 6 30
7 Blackburn Rovers 18 3 28
8 Preston North End 18 -6 28
Though they are a strong team at home, Ipswich will view this as a great opportunity to pick up three points as they look to continue their march towards the Premier League. If they defeat Coventry and Leicester lose at West Brom, Ipswich will finish the evening as the leaders of the Championship.
