The “big club” mentality of Ipswich Town, according to manager Kieran McKenna, is the key to his team’s early-season success in Suffolk. The Tractor Boys have won eight of their nine games since being promoted to the Championship, and their 3-1 triumph over Millwall on Wednesday night has closed the gap on league leaders Leicester City to one point.

Under his leadership, McKenna’s home league record is an excellent P43 W31 D9 L3 F104 A33. The Blues manager spoke to the East Anglian Daily Times in advance of tomorrow’s visit from Coventry City: “Our intent doesn’t sway wildly home or away.” Our goal is to be an offensive, aggressive team at all times.

“However, it is undeniable that having a packed stadium with nearly 30,000 supporters applauding each and every assault, touch, set-play, tackle, and—most importantly—standing by the players in the event that we lose, makes a significant impact. We’ve developed a strong sense of identity at home. We won’t win every game at home, just as we haven’t won every one so far. We scored three goals against a team that was one month out of the Premier League, yet we lost 3–4 at home against Leeds.

“Win, lose, or draw, supporters know that there will always be a maximum effort, an aggressive intent, a genuine desire to play bravely, an attempt to play as a great club, an exciting environment in which to play football, and that the players will give it their all right up to the very last minute. We have made an effort to ensure those things, and our fans wholeheartedly back us.

“We can’t rest on that though,” he continued. Our home form needs to continue, and we need the supporters to continue coming out and supporting us, no matter how the game is going. Let’s make Portman Road a great place for us to play and a tough place for the opposition to come. We need to keep doing all those things I just mentioned.
