Once Highly-Rated Coventry City Man Makes National League Switch

Cian Harries, a former Coventry City academy product, has joined Woking in the National League after his contract with Aldershot Town expired, according to the club’s website.

Michael Doyle made a wise decision in signing a player with plenty of EFL experience, which can assist the Cardinals have a better season next season than they had this year.Woking finished in 17th position, a disappointing result after finishing 3rd the previous season.

They’ll be looking for much better next season, and Harries’ signing underscores the club’s direction. He’d be a regular for Aldershot, who would barely miss out on the play-offs this season after starting 40 league games. With almost 60 games in the EFL to his record, he provides valuable experience to a team that needs it.

Harries began his career at Coventry City and was highly regarded throughout his early years. He was a product of the Sky Blues’ academy and played for the senior team 17 times, nine of which came while the club was in the third division. After impressing, he was signed by Premier League club Swansea City. However, he only made two appearances for them, both in the Championship.

He played for Bristol Rovers and Swindon Town, but battled for game time with the latter. The move to Aldershot undoubtedly got his career back on track, and he’ll now look to continue with the Cardinals.

When asked about the defender’s arrival, team manager Michael Doyle stated:

“Cian Harries is an excellent signing for this football club. We’ve known him since our days at Coventry, when Doyle and Assistant Manager Ben Turner were together. He had a fantastic season last year. He’s a ball-playing centre-half who will be an important part of our game plan.”

Their time together at Coventry undoubtedly contributed to the move, and Harries will be eager to reciprocate his new manager’s faith in him by helping Woking climb the table next season.

Writer’s perspective

After impressing during his early days at Coventry, the move to Swansea did not enhance his development, and it may be a decision the defender regrets. Nonetheless, he’s shown some of his early promise and had a decent year with Aldershot last season.

Woking have revealed a handful of signings today, indicating that they are going all out in the offseason. With 2017 being Doyle’s first full season in charge, they will be expected to progress, and it would be unsurprising to see them in the playoff picture.

Harries will almost undoubtedly play a crucial part and will probably be one of the starting defenders on the first day.
