Former Coventry City favorite Darren Huckerby has weighed in on Sam McCallum’s departure from Norwich City, asserting that any club acquiring the talented defender this summer will secure a significant bargain. McCallum, who was initially signed by Norwich in January 2020 for a potential £3.5 million deal before being loaned back to Coventry City, has had a mixed journey since his move.
Despite being initially sidelined at Norwich, McCallum showcased promise during his loan spells, particularly with Coventry City and QPR. However, injuries hampered his progress, with a hamstring tear requiring surgery and limiting his game time during his stint at QPR.
While McCallum saw more game time with Norwich in subsequent seasons, he often played second fiddle to Dimitris Giannoulis. Huckerby, a regular attendee at Carrow Road, acknowledged McCallum’s potential and attributed his release from Norwich to a desire for consistent first-team football rather than a lack of talent or desire.
Huckerby suggested that McCallum’s adeptness at going forward might make him better suited to a wing-back role rather than a traditional full-back. He expressed confidence that McCallum, at 23 years old, still has ample potential to establish himself as a regular starter at another Championship club.
Reflecting on McCallum’s situation, Huckerby emphasized the importance of regular game time for a player’s development, especially at McCallum’s age. He indicated that while McCallum’s initial move to Norwich was based on potential, his inability to secure a consistent starting role necessitates a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
In considering McCallum’s future, Huckerby highlighted the need for pragmatism, stressing that dwelling on past accomplishments or financial deals is futile if a player hasn’t realized their potential on the field.
