A former Collingwood footballer faces charges after a crash in Western Australia on Friday morning resulted in the deaths of two people.

Two women in their 80s were killed in a collision between the Toyota and the Suzuki hatchback, which is said to have been caused by Shannon Cox, 38.

Paramedics attended to a 12-year-old female passenger in the Toyota who had minor injuries.

Cox faces two charges of driving dangerously and causing death. On Saturday, the former Collingwood player was scheduled to appear before Perth Magistrates Court.

Cox played 25 games with Collingwood over the course of three seasons after being selected in the 2006 rookie draft out of the West Australian Football League.

He participated in 11 of the team’s first 13 games in 2009 as a senior before playing the rest of the season in the VFL.

That year, at the age of 23, the Collingwood defender announced his retirement from professional football, telling the team he no longer wanted to play in the AFL.

Following his time in the AFL, Cox joined the Collie Eagles and Donnybrook Football Club in the South West Football League.

Later this month, the problematic former star was scheduled to appear in court on a number of drug-related allegations, including drug possession and conspiring to sell or provide methylamphetamine.

In 2016, he was charged with assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine with the purpose to sell or supply, and possession of property that had been stolen or obtained illegally when he appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court.
