2 Cincinnati Bengals starters reportedly viewed as possible cap casualties this offseason

In 2023, the Cincinnati Bengals faced challenges, particularly due to quarterback Joe Burrow’s season-ending injury and a regression in their defense, leading to unmet expectations. Before bolstering their roster through NFL free agency, the team may need to part ways with some players to manage their salary cap effectively.

ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, in previewing the Bengals’ offseason, highlighted running back Joe Mixon and defensive tackle B.J. Hill as potential cap casualties for Cincinnati this year. Mixon, approaching his age-28 season, has faced uncertainty with the Bengals in recent years. While there were considerations of releasing him before the 2023 NFL offseason, the front office retained him. Mixon’s performance, with an average of 4 yards per carry and over 1,400 scrimmage yards for the second time since 2020, somewhat bolstered his standing.

However, the timing of decisions regarding Mixon is critical. Releasing him by March 17 would yield a $6.1 million increase in cap space for Cincinnati. Delaying the decision until after March 18, when the 2024 league year begins, would result in a lesser gain of $3.1 million in cap space.

The Bengals have seen promise in rookie running back Chase Brown, drafted in the fifth round, who averaged 4.1 yards per carry and made an impact in the passing game with 156 receiving yards from 14 receptions. If Mixon is let go, Brown would likely assume a more significant role in the upcoming season.

Yet, there’s a possibility that Cincinnati opts to retain Mixon, believing the difference in his cap hit versus the savings from releasing him isn’t significant enough to warrant his departure. If so, it’s likely that 2024 would mark Mixon’s final season with the Bengals, as he’s slated to become a free agent in 2025.
