Braden Shewmake’s latest, injury

Braden Shewmake, an infielder for the Chicago White Sox, will be out for two to four weeks. Shewmake left the San Francisco Giants game early on Saturday due to a sprained ankle. He was acquired by Chicago during the offseason in exchange for Aaron Bummer.

Braden Shewmake's Injury Leaves Options and Decisions Ahead for White Sox

As a reserve infielder on the 40-man roster, Shewmake has first dibs on the White Sox Opening Day roster. But his injury alters the decision-making process. Earlier in the spring, the Pale Hose sent Lenyn Sosa and top prospect Colson Montgomery to the minor leagues, as was to be expected.

What Now?

Montgomery needs more minor league experience before he can be considered in 2024. Lenyn Sosa did not get an at-bat for ten days prior to his demotion to the Charlotte Knights, as Shewmake and Danny Mendick saw the most of the playing time. Sosa may make a comeback to White Sox camp as he is now the only healthy backup infielder on the 40-man roster.

Mendick, though, is a non-roster invitee at camp and might make the 26-man roster despite his lackluster play thus far. That being said, in order to create space on the 40-man roster for him, Chicago would need to assign a different player.

What’s Coming Up Next?
Pedro Grifol, the captain of the White Sox, has very few, if any, decent options when it comes to bench infielders. Shewmake gave Grifol the player profile he wants, but unless he makes a quick recovery from an ankle sprain or a trade, Grifol just has Mendick and Sosa to pick from.
