The terrible news was confirmed by Millwall early on Saturday.
Following the Lions’ announcement that custodian Matija Sarkic, 26, had died, QPR and Charlton Athletic have honoured the memory of the 26-year-old.
The news was announced by Millwall on Saturday morning, and the team expressed its “complete devastation” at the player’s passing. After joining the team from Wolves in the summer, the Montenegro international made 33 appearances for the team in the previous campaign.
The QPR club account sent a message on social networking platform X stating, “Everyone at QPR is thinking of Matija’s family and friends, as well as all at Millwall FC, at this extremely difficult time.”
Sarkic joined Wolves in 2020 after graduating from the Anderlecht and Aston Villa development programmes. Just three appearances were made by the goalie for Wolves, two of them were in the FA Cup and one in the Carabao Cup.
As recently as June 5, Sarkic participated in a 2-0 friendly loss for Montenegro against Belgium while playing football. He played in both of Millwall’s games against QPR during the previous campaign.
“Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26,” claimed a statement from the team.
“A Montenegro international, Matija proudly represented his country on numerous occasions. Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time.
“The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family is respected.”
Other London clubs including League One outfit Charlton Athletic also shared messages of condolences online. The Addicks wrote: “Such sad news. Our thoughts and condolences are with Matija’s family, friends and all at Millwall at this time.”
