Charlton player about to leave as league one club make offer

MK Dons are keen to secure midfielder Jack Payne on a permanent deal following his release from Charlton Athletic, as reported by The Real EFL. Payne, 29, joined MK Dons on a season-long loan last summer after falling out of favor at Charlton early in the campaign. Initially a starter in three of the first four games under Dean Holden, Payne was allowed to leave following Holden’s dismissal.

His unexpected availability late in the transfer window attracted several clubs, but Payne ultimately chose MK Dons, where he became a regular starter under both Graham Alexander and Mike Williamson. The former Lincoln City and Swindon Town player was instrumental in MK Dons’ rise up the League Two table. After being relegated from League One the previous season, the Dons had a slow start in the fourth tier, failing to win in nine games throughout September and October, dropping to 18th place. However, Williamson’s arrival as manager sparked a resurgence, pushing the team towards the upper echelons of the table.

Despite their efforts, MK Dons fell short of automatic promotion as Stockport County, Wrexham, and Mansfield Town secured spots in League One. The Dons entered the play-offs as favorites against seventh-placed Crawley Town but suffered a devastating defeat, exiting in the semi-finals with a record-breaking aggregate loss of 8-1.

Looking ahead, Williamson aims to regroup and target promotion next season, with Payne being a key part of his plans. Payne concluded the season with six goals and six assists from 40 league appearances and is now a free agent. MK Dons are eager to sign him permanently, though they may face competition from other clubs.

Payne brings a winning mentality, having achieved promotion in every tier of the English Football League. He helped Southend United reach League One in 2015, played a part in Huddersfield Town’s promotion to the Premier League in 2017, and contributed to Blackburn Rovers’ return to the Championship in 2018 during a loan spell. His experience and track record make him a valuable asset for MK Dons as they prepare for the upcoming season.
