TRANSFER LATEST: Celtic is pursuing the striker for Panathinaikos

Celtic continues to monitor Fotis Ioannidis, the forward for Panathianaikos. Before the current season ends, the team is actively looking for a new striker, and manager Brendan Rodgers is eager to add more quality to the team after being denied it for an extended period of time.

We had a ton of work ahead of us to fill the void left by Ange Postecoglou’s decision to defect and join Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. The Irishman returned to Celtic Park that summer. Following a run of disappointing performances that saw Leicester City languish at the bottom of the table, Rodgers was made available.

After considerable convincing, Dermot Desmond got his countrymen to agree to bring Rodgers back for a second stint, with the goal of advancing the work that Ange Postecoglou had started. The team that won the triple crown didn’t need much improvement, but in typical Celtic fashion, the Parkhead money men sold top talent without replacing it with comparable players, leaving Rodgers and the fans perplexed.

That’s all by the way; when the football season ends this year, sufficient reinforcements must be brought in. The former manager of Liverpool will be searching the market for that extra special player who can help the team win both domestically and internationally. In order to support Kyogo Furuhashi, who is having trouble, Adam Idah was brought in during the winter transfer window. The Carnlough man simply cannot seem to trust Oh Hyeon-gyu.

But there’s no doubting that in order to support Kyogo and possibly challenge him for that jersey, a player of a higher caliber is required at the top of the pitch. Calciomercatto reports that the Bhoys, along with a number of other European sides, are still searching for Ionnidis. Lazio sees him as the next big thing after the prolific Ciro Immobile, who Celtic is familiar with from watching him put us to the sword in the UEFA Champions League group stages this year in Rome.

Sevilla, West Ham United, and Eintracht Frankfurt—the brave conquerors of the Rangers in the Europa League—are rumored to be pursuing the Greek, who has had an unquestionably outstanding season for Greek giants. With 21 goals and 7 assists in 38 games played thus far, it’s easy to understand why people from all over the world are interested in hiring him. Despite the possibility that the cost would be far more than Celtic would be prepared to pay for any one player right now. The current fee being discussed is approximately £12 million, which might be too much for the Celtic finance executives.
