Negotiations to keep Kwon Hyeok-kyu on loan for an additional season have begun at St Mirren.

The midfielder, who joined Celtic in the summer from Korean Second Division team Busan Ipark, never played in a competitive game before joining Paisley on loan in January.

Kwon has had an immediate influence at St. Mirren, who are certain to finish in the top six, despite his paucity of playing time.

A longer loan is probably more appealing to Celtic and the player, therefore it seems unlikely that he will return to compete for a starting position in the first team.

In an interview with Daily Record, Saints head coach Stephen Robinson stated:

Stephen Robinson: St Mirren appoint former Motherwell boss to replace Jim Goodwin | Football News | Sky Sports

We truly want to hold onto him. We’re having a conversation with Celtic about it, and we might decide to retain him for an additional season. Although we would be happy to do so, we won’t make that decision because he isn’t one of our players. It was about getting him playing time, even though we knew he would have an impact.

He hasn’t played much since arriving in the nation. It’s acclimating him to Scottish football, which occasionally involves long throws and balls that he may not be accustomed to. The gameplay’s physical aspect.

He has imparted a touch of refinement and poise. It is something we would really like to finish. That might be a long way off, but in my perfect world, that would happen.

Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley are the Celtic team’s initial picks. Until Reo Hatate returns from injury, Brendan Rodgers has Paulo Bernardo and Tomoki Iwata vying for third place. Daniel Kelly and Odin Thiago Holm are other midfield alternatives.
