On Wednesday evening, there was a significantly increased police presence around Celtic Park, primarily to manage the large number of Feyenoord fans attending the game. Well before the match started, a substantial group of Feyenoord supporters congregated outside the stadium, necessitating police intervention to prevent potential clashes with Celtic fans along the Celtic Way.
The situation escalated to a point of disorder, as described by our on-site reporter, with the police having to exert control over the Feyenoord Ultras. The area was heavily policed, evidenced by the presence of no fewer than 20 police vans near the stadium’s away end.
Police Scotland had preemptively identified the match as a high-risk event. This was not without reason, as the Feyenoord ultras had previously sought to provoke Celtic supporters during their first encounter.
Their antagonistic behaviour seemed to persist into this latest match. Fortunately, the police successfully guided the Feyenoord fans into the stadium without further incident.
Here are the Feyenoord fans making their way through Glasgow earlier on Wednesday evening.
Tonight is Celtic’s final game in the group as they bow out of the competition finishing fourth. The bhoys have had a torrid campaign full of what-ifs.
